Equitable Advancement of Computer Science Education

The Equitable Advancement of Computer Science is a partnership that provides professional development, integrated curricular resources, leadership tools, and a networked community of practice that can ultimately be applied across Washington State to result in equitable access to computer science for all students.

In March 2016, Bellevue School District and partner Seattle Public Schools were awarded a  grant to move forward on an innovative program to advance equity in computer science education.
The two-phase project is designed to serve all students and boost participation of historically underrepresented students, including girls, under-represented minorities, English language learners, and low-income students.

“We teamed up so that we can have a broader impact, as far as computer science education. We want to be able to share resources and strategies with each other that  will impact students that are most underserved in computer science, especially girls, students of color, and students who come from a low-income community,” says Cheri Bortleson, Bellevue School District curriculum developer. Dan Gallagher, Interim Director of STEM and Arts in Seattle Public Schools, says, “School districts often work in isolation from one another, even though we have common problems.  We chose to work together to more effectively tackle the insufficient and inequitable access to computer science education.”

Throughout the 2016-17 school year, Bellevue and Seattle educators will share all resources developed and used by one another in an open-source online platform.
